Future Ford AVs Could Link Communications For Passengers

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a linked communications system for passengers that may be used in future Ford autonomous vehicles (AVs), Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on February 21st, 2023, published on August 19th, 2025, and assigned serial number 12395607.

The Ford Authority Take

This past March, Ford published a patent outlining an idea for a system that could provide occupants with tours of different sites in autonomous vehicles, replacing the traditional human tour guide by automatically taking occupants along predetermined routes that display various points of interest, whether they be museums, landmarks, or other things that folks generally want to see, and that system could also narrate the experience. Now, this newly published patent presents us with another AV-related idea for a linked communications system for passengers that may be used in future Ford autonomous vehicles, too.

In this case, Ford proposes a communications system using a screen and camera, which is wirelessly connected to a screen on the exterior of the vehicle. The concept is to give people the ability to communicate with those outside of the vehicle, which could be useful in a few scenarios. In this case, Ford notes that it could simply provide people on the outside of the vehicle with a view of the interior, making it easy to see when a public transport vehicle is full, rather than having to actually get in or peek inside via the door to make the same determination.

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
