Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a charging optimization system that may be used in future Ford EVs, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on February 7th, 2024, published on August 7th, 2025, and assigned serial number 0249779.
The Ford Authority Take
Ford has filed several patents exploring different ways EV owners may one day benefit from improved charging methods, which is something that most expect to happen in the coming years. That list includes ideas for an EV charger rating system and charger reservation capability, both of which would make it easier for EV owners to find and secure the best possible charger in their vicinity. Now, this newly published patent presents us with an idea for a charging optimization system that may be used in future Ford EVs, too.
Given the fact that charging an EV currently takes quite a lot longer than filling an ICE vehicle up with gas, this patent aims to prevent owners from facing additional wait times if a charging station is full, which can only add to the time needed to charge up. The system would help prevent backups at chargers by estimating the number of vehicles at each charging stop. The system could also set a time threshold for those using the chargers, or even limit charging to a certain degree as a way to prevent backups from occurring, too.
“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
