Future Ford Vehicles May Get In-Cabin Motion Identification Tech

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for in-cabin motion identification technology that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on February 8th, 2024, published on August 14th, 2025, and assigned serial number 0256673.

The Ford Authority Take

In recent months, Ford has filed a few patents outlining various in-cabin monitoring systems, though each has taken a slightly different approach in that regard. One such idea is for an in-cabin monitoring system designed to monitor the status of an object inside of a vehicle, as well as the condition of occupants, while another presented us with an idea for using biometrics to control features inside of a vehicle. Now, this newly published patent keeps that trend going with a new idea for in-cabin motion identification technology that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.

In this case, Ford proposes using a system that could identify the motions of passengers in a vehicle, including when they enter or exit the cabin, in this case, using ultrawideband radar technology. As for what such a thing could be used for, Ford provides us with one notable example – the ability to determine when a child or pet has been left behind in a vehicle, which is particularly worthwhile given the dangers associated with such things. Thus, such a system may one day come to fruition and potentially even replace existing tech designed to provide rear seat warnings, too.

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
