Celebrity-owned rides are always popular draws at collector car auctions, if for no other reason than the fact that they offer up built-in bragging rights for the new owner. As such, we’ve seen plenty of those types of vehicles hit the auction block as of late and sell for solid money, including a 2017 Ford F-250 customized by RealTruck and NBA legend Dwyane Wade, which was shown off at the 2024 SEMA Show, as well as a custom Ford GT inspired by NBA champion Stephen Curry. Now, this rebodied Ford Mustang joins that list.
This rebodied Ford Mustang is set to cross the block at Mecum’s Larry’s Legacy auction next month after it was originally built for and previously owned by NBA Hall of Fame player Shaquille O’Neal. One would obviously be hard-pressed to tell that what’s now a Zimmer Golden Spirit convertible was once a pony car, but that’s precisely the case. Underneath that very vintage looking bodywork likes a custom-stretched 2000s vintage Mustang chassis, in fact, though it’s now covered in a totally unique fiberglass body.
That look is further accented by a set of polished wire wheels, which in this case are wrapped with whitewall tires to complete the transformation. Inside, one will find leather upholstery with Zimmer embroidery, coupled with amenities such as air conditioning, a tilt steering column, a Pioneer stereo system, and power windows and locks.
In terms of power, that comes from the Mustang’s naturally-aspirated 4.6L V8, mated to an automatic transmission. Power brakes and steering help provide a modernized driving experience as well, as one would expect.
On top of that, this custom build comes with a few goodies proving its celebrity ownership history – an autographed basketball and Laker’s jersey from Shaq himself, as well as a photo – making it a pretty cool target for fans of the NBA legend.
