Early Ford Mustang models have always been incredibly popular not only with the general public, but also, enthusiasts and collectors alike. In that realm, Shelby Mustangs remain among the most coveted and valuable, which isn’t terribly surprising given how rare, capable, and special they are. Thus, it certainly stands to reason that this 1968 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR fastback will conjure up huge money at auction, which is precisely where it’s in the process of potentially changing hands right now.
This 1968 Ford Mustang GT500KR is being auctioned off at Bring a Trailer as one of just 1,053 fastbacks produced in that model year, but it’s a bit more special than most. The GT500KR joined the Shelby American lineup mid-way through the 1968 model year, sharing its styling with the regular GT500, meaning that it has elements including grille-mounted Lucas lights, a rear spoiler, sequential taillights, and air scoops on the quarter panels.
In this case, it’s finished in the famous color known as Highland Green, and rolls on a set of aluminum 10-spoke 15-inch wheels wrapped with Goodyear Eagle tires. Inside, one will find a tidy Saddle interior with amenities such as a cassette radio and air conditioning, along with a roll bar fitted with inertia-reel seatbelts that was standard in Shelby cars of this era.
Underneath, the pony car features an upgraded suspension with heavy-duty coil springs, a front anti-roll bar, heavy-duty leaf springs, and parallel rear Koni shocks, joining power steering and front disc brakes. Power comes from a replacement 428 cubic-inch V8 equipped with a four-barrel Holley carburetor, which is mated to a three-speed automatic transmission and Traction-Lok differential with 3.50 gears.
It isn’t every day that we see a ’68 GT500KR surface for sale, but there have been quite a few other pony cars from this same model year that have crossed the auction block as of late – including some modified ones. Those include a wild safari-style build, as well as a Coyote V8-powered example, to name just a couple.
