Originally expected to arrive for the 2024 model year, the latest mid-cycle refresh for the Ford Explorer was delayed a bit, ultimately landing for the 2025 model year. Thus, the proverbial paint is barely dry on the latest version of the popular model, but as is always the case in the automotive world, we’re already looking ahead to see when it will receive its next major update. Now, a new report indicates that the Ford Explorer is scheduled to receive a major update before the end of the current decade.
According to Automotive News, the Ford Explorer is currently expected to get a full redesign in 2029, which is a bit later than previously expected. In fact, AN reported that the next Ford Explorer redesign was slated to happen in 2027 just last year, but as we’ve seen with other models in The Blue Oval’s lineup, it seems as if that action has been delayed a bit. As for what we can expect from the next-generation Explorer, this report didn’t provide any details on that front, however.
The next-gen Explorer will undoubtedly build on what Ford did with the 2025 model, which included some minor exterior styling updates such as a revised fascia that varies slightly by trim, slimmer LED headlights, and lower, wider air curtains. In the rear, the taillights now extend to the nameplate appliqué, while Platinum, ST-Line, and ST customers can also opt for a black-painted roof.
Inside the cabin, the 2025 Ford Explorer features some more notable updates, including new soft touch surfaces, available ActiveX seating, silver mesh accents, and a redesigned dashboard that’s been moved forward to increase front row legroom. The 2025 Explorer was also the first Ford-branded vehicle to get the new Ford Digital Experience software, which runs on a larger 13.2-inch infotainment screen, coupled with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
