Ford F-150 Class Action Lawsuit Filed Over Alleged Oil Consumption Issue

Over the past few years, more than one class action lawsuit has been filed over Ford F-150 pickups equipped with the 5.0L V8 Coyote engine, which claim that a variety of faulty internal components are causing those powerplants to exhibit excessive oil consumption – in some cases, leading to engine failure. The Blue Oval has been trying to get one such lawsuit in Canada dismissed on the grounds that it’s offering free repairs for oil consumption issues within warranty and mileage limits, but now, it’s facing another lawsuit from more Ford F-150 owners.

According to Car Complaints, this new lawsuit – Bryan, et al., v. Ford Motor Company – was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan by plaintiffs represented by The Miller Law Firm, P.C., Sauder Schelkopf LLC, Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll PLLC, Handley Farah & Anderson PLLC, Baron & Herskowitz, and Gordon & Partners, PA. Like the aforementioned lawsuit, it claims that 2018-2020 Ford F-150 pickups with the Coyote V8 are defective and consume excessive amounts of oil.

Additionally, the lawsuit alleges that the owner’s manual is incorrect in this case, as it pertains to how much oil these Ford F-150 pickups use and how often oil must be added. Since the engine can’t maintain proper oil levels across the recommended interval, it notes that owners must pay close attention to avoid running too low and causing engine damage. On top of all that, the lawsuit also alleges that the engine allows oil to pass into the combustion chamber, which decreases performance and fuel efficiency while leaving carbon deposits behind.

Ford has previously denied these claims, arguing that it set a “minimum criterion for oil consumption for average retail customers based on laboratory/customer correlation” of 10,000 miles per quart (MPQ), which it calculated using “engine laboratory oil consumption … mapped to public road vehicle operating conditions.” It adds that MPQ isn’t based on real-world driving behaviors and is only used as a benchmark for internal testing purposes, and that it “does not quantify expected oil consumption in the Owner’s Manual or other customer information.”

  • Just had our engine replaced by our local dealer. It required fresh oil change then “rechecks” every 200 miles for 1,000 miles. The threshold is one quart usage per 1,000 miles.
Now we are waiting for parts to repair defective 10 speed Auto. Geez Ford! Love the truck though!

    • I feel your pain. I replaced the engine in my 2020 F-150 V8, and within 3 months replaced the 10-speed transmission! It's not even paid for and we've already worked out over $10,000 in repairs.

    • My name is Justin Walden I just bought this truck and I've had it for 3 months and and 3 months I have put in between two oil changes mind you that I did not let go 5,000 mi. I also had to put two quarts out of time because that's what when it goes all the way to the second hole that means it's two quarts not one quart by the way and I have put a minimum of 8 quarts and two oil changes and yes my truck does idle a lot during the day and the heat I don't know I think that they should take the time and replace the motors in these trucks for what the money we're spending on them.

  • Got a 24 Coyote and don't see problem yet.
That piece about referencing the owners manual is bad advice unless you paid 100$ they want for a printed owners manual. Yes 77,000.00$ truck does not include a owners manual, did have the corrections addendums but no manual.

  • Have a 2018 f150
I’ve had to 10 speed transmission replaced two times from dealership and lifters replaced as well. it’s got be some kind on lemon law on these trucks !! Not to mention all the oil consumption

  • I have a 2018 Ford F150, over 50,000 miles now. She drives loud and braking choppy. I don't know if calipers are sticking but she seems to ride rough. How can we join this lawsuit? Will we be contacted?

  • I have replaced 2 starters 1 -10 speed transmission and now they are telling me my timing is off and that’s what is making it kil on me at the stop lights. I have a 2019 F150 Platinum. I have 76000 miles on it. Is there a Lemmon law on these trucks or a recall that I missed ?

    • I'm having the same issue. 2019 Lariat. The dealership here told me to change my spark plugs after the had it for 2 days. Replaced plugs with Ford OEM replacements. No change.

  • I have a 2018 with the 5.0 Coyote with just over 100K on it. It has always used about a quart of oil every 3500 miles since new. It hasn’t changed over the life of the engine so far. I tow about 3K per year with it. The fuel injectors have always been noisy but you can’t hear them in the cab with the windows up. The 10 speed trans was serviced at about 70K and has been flawless. It still drives nice & tight. I’ve driven GM pick-ups in the past and those engines ran quieter and had little to no oil consumption between oil changes. I’d like if my F150 did the same but the oil consumption does not seem excessive to me. I like the truck and plan to keep it at least a few more years as the value isn’t very high any longer and it is still serving its purpose.

  • I have a 2017 F150. It has 113,000 miles on it. It's been everywhere. We even tow a 30'fifth wheel. Towed it to Alaska and back. Doing it again next year. It's used oil since around 50,000 miles. I thought all cyote's did.. But it has a way that helps me. It's called a dip stick. I check it regularly. No problem. Would not trade that truck for anything.

  • I have 2018 uses oil and I had to replace the transmission at 134,000 . Ford owes me big all the extra oil usage and the cost to replace a transmission that ford knew it was causing issues.

  • I have a 2018 coyote 5.0 and it always burns oil and have had to replace the 10 speed transmission. How do I get involved with the law suit?
