The Ford Transit Custom may be the current apple of European commercial consumers’ eyes, but the larger Ford Transit has never fallen too far behind. That’s particularly true in the UK, where the Transit Custom and Transit have long ranked as the first and second best-selling vans and light-commercial vehicles (LCV) overall, and that continues to be the case to this day. In fact, the Ford Transit was once again the UK’s second best-selling van and LCV overall in August 2025, continuing its streak in that exact spot for yet another month.
According to new data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the Ford Transit recorded 1,733 sales in the month of August across the UK, which was once again good enough for second place, behind only the Transit Custom. Through the first eight months of the year, the Transit also ranked second with 18,080 sales, pretty far behind the Transit Custom at 30,460 units, but also well ahead of the third-place Ford Ranger, which has racked up 11,247 sales – not to mention its arch-rival, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, and its 8,333 units sold.
In spite of the continued success of the Transit family in the UK, these results also arrive amid a big slowdown in the overall LCV market in August, as registrations plummeted by 13.3 percent to 14,365 units. This is generally nothing new, as LCV sales tend to be a bit soft in August every year across that country, but it’s notable, regardless.
August is conventionally a low volume month for the new LCV market so while the continued decline is disappointing, the focus is on September to deliver the fleet investment and growth that would reflect a healthy business environment,” said SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes. “A thriving market is also essential for decarbonization, given the vast choice of electric van models already available to suit almost every need. Manufacturers need greater volumes to ensure investment in innovation continues unabated.”
