Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a water filtering hub that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on January 31st, 2024, published on September 23rd, 2025, and assigned serial number 12424075.

The Ford Authority Take

Ford has explored various ways it might provide future customers with the ability to store and even filter water in their vehicles one day, as we’ve learned from a few recent patent filings. Those include ideas for a vehicle water heating system, water generation estimation technology, and onboard water generation diagnostics, to name just a few. Now, this newly published patent presents us with another similar yet unique idea, this time, for a water filtering hub that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.

The concept here is to actually use one’s vehicle as a way to find and filter water, which this system would do using data retrieved from a network. From there, the system would find suitable water sources, inform the user, and then provide the ability to filter that water so that it’s safe to drink. Such a thing could certainly prove useful for those that travel off the grid, but also, in times when one is under a boil water advisory and might just need to find or filter water appropriately in the event that it isn’t safe to consume.

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
