We’ve seen our fair share of armored Blue Oval vehicles over the years, most of which are used to transport people like politicians, celebrities, or anyone else that might find themselves targeted by, well, folks that may not like or agree with them. That was the case just last year when the United States Department of State (DoS) began testing a handful of armored Ford Expedition SUVs that look bone stock on the outside, and yet, are equipped to protect occupants from just about anything. Now, Minot Air Force Base is set to add some armored Ford F-350 trucks to its fleet as well.
Minot Air Force Base, located in North Dakota, will be receiving these new armored Ford F-350 patrol trucks over the course of the next two years, which will replace its aging fleet of BearCats and Humvees. The concept is to provide troops with a more modern vehicle that’s safer and more efficient, as well as cheaper to maintain. In recent years, Minot AFB’s fleet has become increasingly expensive and more difficult to keep going, particularly as the miles rack up.
According to officials, the Ford F-350 represents the best choice in regard to this fleet transition because it “offers a balance between protection, adaptability and cost-effectiveness.” The trucks are fitted with a rear armored crew box featuring independent climate controls and intercom systems, and are designed to provide supreme off-road capability. The trucks are also easier to maintain and parts are readily available, not to mention equipped with far more safety features. The first Ford F-350 shipments just arrived this month, with full delivery expected to be completed by 2027.
“From a maintenance perspective, this is a big win,” said Senior Airman Alexis Garnigan, 5LRS vehicle maintenance apprentice at Minot Air Force Base. “The turnaround is usually quicker, depending on the job, so it saves time and resources for other missions in need.”
