1989 Ford Ranger Radio Flyer Conversion Heading To Auction

Radio Flyer is one of the more well-known American toy companies, an outfit that has existed for over 100 years to this point. The company’s most famous product is the iconic red Radio Flyer wagon, which has been around since the very beginning. Over the years, the Radio Flyer wagon has remained a favorite among young folks, and has become a bit of a pop culture phenomenon on its own – even inspiring automotive design in some cases. Thus, perhaps it’s no surprise that someone created a giant red wagon using a Ford Ranger as its base.

Now, this wild 1989 Ford Ranger Radio Flyer wagon conversion is scheduled to cross the auction block at Mecum’s upcoming 2025 Las Vegas sale, taking place in November. While it started life as a regular old, seemingly nice 1989 Ford Ranger extended cab pickup, one would be hard-pressed to tell that’s the case today. Rather, the builder removed all of the Ranger’s original body panels and replaced them with flat steel pieces, finished in red, and adorned with “Radio Flyer” script, just like the toy wagon itself.

The builder didn’t just want to create some giant Radio Flyer wagon replica so that it could sit around and garner looks, either. Rather, this thing actually runs and drives, and it has functional doors built right in, too. Inside, one will find what is essentially the only clue that this contraption was once a Ford Ranger – the dash and steering wheel were plucked from the pickup, making for an odd looking but effective combination.

There are also a couple of seats for the driver and passenger, plus loads of storage behind them for whatever one might want to haul around – it’s quite practical in that regard. There’s also a windshield to keep the bugs out of one’s face, while power still comes from the original naturally-aspirated Ford 2.9L V6, mated to an automatic transmission.

Thus far, this very cool Ford Ranger Radio Flyer wagon conversion has been used in various local parades, where we imagine that it attracted plenty of attention from younger and older folks alike – and we don’t doubt that it will conjure up a similar amount of interest at auction, either, as the latest odd yet cool mashup we’ve seen in that type of venue.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
