Ant Anstead Lucks Out With MK1 Ford Capri Purchase: Video

TV presenter Ant Anstead knows a thing or two about cars. Naturally, when he found a MK1 Ford Capri for sale, he jumped on the vintage muscle car – and this small but mighty little machine turned out to be one excellent purchase.

The MK1 Ford Capri is painted bright yellow, and it’s being sold by a man named Mark on behalf of his son-in-law. Anstead opens the hood and begins the inspection, and he notes right away that “someone’s spent some money on this.” Interestingly, it appears to have been upbadged with GT emblems since it’s being advertised as a GXL, although upon closer inspection, Anstead thinks that it actually is a GT, which would make it worth a lot more.

After some bargaining, Anstead agrees on a price for the MK1 Ford Capri and takes it home. It needs some work – particularly in the steering system – and so Anstead and his father get to work. Once that’s all settled, Anstead says “we are crushing the Capri game!” but admits that it needs more of that “fast Ford feel.”

Andstead’s father visits their Capri expert, and returns with incredible news: this bright yellow Ford Capri is, in fact, a GT, and not a GXL, meaning it’s the sportier, more powerful version rather than luxury focused. It’s the wrong year to be a GXL and doesn’t feature double headlights, and that means it’s worth quite a bit more than initially expected.

Anstead takes the MK1 Ford Capri to auction to find it a new owner. He bought the vehicle for £10,500 (roughly $14,050 USD), so he’s hoping, obviously, that he can turn a profit on the coupe. The price keeps getting driven higher and higher – and eventually, the hammer falls on £15,000 ($20,050 USD).

The Ford Capri pictured here is a relic of the past, but the Capri nameplate lives on as the antithesis of the gas-guzzling coupe of old. It’s now an all-electric crossover, which might not be all that bad.
