Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for an EV charge plug with a swivel joint that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on April 12th, 2024, published on October 16th, 2025, and assigned serial number 0319780.
The Ford Authority Take
Ford has published quite a few patents revolving around various ways it might improve EV charging in the coming years, which makes sense given the fact that those types of vehicles are slowly gaining market share. That list includes an idea for charging cords with LED lighting built right in, which is actually designed to inform users when there might be an issue with a charging session. Now, Ford has published a patent for an EV charge plug with a swivel joint that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
In this case, Ford is aiming to make the simple act of connecting a charging cable to an EV a bit easier, which is a simple yet potentially very useful concept. As many EV owners are well aware, tangled-up cords can oftentimes be a pain to unravel at worst, and just a waste of time at best, but having a swiveling joint may very well eliminate that particular issue altogether. We’ve seen this in other things like pressure washer hoses and spray gun attachments, which also tend to get tangled up – and swiveling attachments are quite an attractive way to fix precisely that.
“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
