Ford Motor Company Valencia Body And Assembly – Valencia, Spain

The Ford Motor Company Valencia Body and Assembly plant is located in Almussafes, on the southern part of the city of Valencia, in Spain. The facility currently overseas production of vehicles destined for the European market like the Ford Kuga, Ford Transit Connect and Ford Mondeo.

Ford Valencia first started production of the Ford Fiesta in 1976, and quickly grew to become Ford’s largest manufacturing complex outside the United States, with a production capacity of 450,000 vehicles a year. The plant was built under the leadership of Hanns Brand, who had previously been responsible for building the Ford Saarlouis plant, which served as a blueprint for the Valencia project

Historical Timeline

• 1973: Henry Ford II and the Ford Motor Company purchase a 270 acre orchard on the edge of Valencia, in Spain.
• 1976: Following approval from Spanish dictator Francisco Franco, the Valencia Body and Assembly plant opens its doors. Construction costs elevate to a whopping $680 million. Ford Fiesta production begins in October.
• 1977: Demand for the Ford Fiesta in Spain is so high, that the waiting list to obtain one exceeds a full year. At the time, the plant employed 7,500 workers, with full capacity reached. Ford sets a goal to increase employment to 10,000 workers.
• 2006: The plant accounts for 8.2% of Valencia’s economic output.
