2022 Toyota GR 86 Debuts As Global Ford Mustang Competitor

Last November, the all-new, second-gen 2022 Subaru BRZ was revealed with fresh styling and a little more power, competing in the ever-shrinking segment of rear-wheel-drive sports cars with the Ford Mustang. Now, the BRZ’s twin – the 2022 Toyota GR 86 – has also been revealed as the third global model in Toyota Gazoo Racing’s GR series of sports cars, alongside the GR Supra and GR GR Yaris.

As of right now, the 2022 Toyota GR 86 is scheduled to launch in Japan this fall, and there’s no word on when it might arrive in other countries including the U.S. Regardless, it’s pretty much mechanically identical to the BRZ, with enough styling tweaks to set it apart visually. That means the GR 86 is once again a front-engine, 2+2, rear-wheel-drive coupe designed to provide owners with lots of inexpensive fun.

Like the BRZ, the 2022 GR 86 sheds its old 2.0-liter flat-four for a larger displacement 2.4-liter powerplant. Toyota has not yet released any figures for the new engine, but the 2022 BRZ produces 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, which represent gains of 23 horsepower and 28 pound-feet of torque over the previous generation.

Buyers can choose between a proper six-speed manual transmission and a six-speed automatic gearbox, while the car’s 0-60 time has reportedly improved from 7.4 seconds to 6.3 clicks. The key here is its lightweight – the BRZ tips the scales at just 2,800 pounds, thanks in part to an aluminum roof and front fenders, while torsional rigidity has improved by 50 percent over the outgoing model.

On the inside, the GR 86 gets a much nicer-looking cabin than its predecessor, one fitted with a 7-inch TFT instrument cluster display that features an opening animation sequence inspired by the piston movements of the GR 86’s horizontally opposed engine, which is a nifty touch. The overall cabin layout is designed to allow the driver to concentrate on driving, rather than hunting for controls.

Toyota hasn’t announced pricing for the 2022 GT 86 yet, but it’s expected to once again start around the $30,000 mark when it launches later this year.

  2. Well, time will tell how good the platform is. 0 to 60 times are in the ballpark though…

  3. Without any doubt. I stay with the Mustang. No need to compare.

  4. I bet it would be fun to drive, but the exterior styling is not very well differentiated from the Subaru, I wouldn’t be able to tell you which was which if there wasn’t a badge. And I know it says they updated the interior but it me it looks very dated, reminds me of an old Pontiac.

  5. The mustang’s starting price and equipment all the way to the top of the line price and equipment covers a very large area!! The only fair way to compare these two cars is with MSRP. Compare the toyota to the ford based on like price, then and only then could a no bs comparison be made.

  7. As an owner of Mustangs and BRZs (3 and 2 respectively), the Mustang and BRZ/GR86 are NOT competition.

    Very different cars.
