Ford Patent Filed For Cargo Area Tool Carrier System

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a cargo area tool carrier system, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on September 30th, 2020, published on March 31st, 2022, and assigned serial number 0097611.

The Ford Authority Take

Ford has a history of filing patents and trademarks related to various methods used to increase cargo and storage space, including, most recently, one outlining a potential magnetic pickup truck bed. This new Ford patent pertains to SUVs and crossovers, however, and depicts a section in the cargo area that could be used as a dedicated space to store tools, which could come in handy for anyone with the inkling or more comprehensive knowledge of how to use them.

The cargo area tool carrier depicted in this Ford patent is located underneath the load floor in the rear of an SUV/crossover, which means that it doesn’t take away one inch of cargo space. At the same time, lifting up the cover grants access to a nifty tool storage area, keeping it out of sight – a nice feature considering how common tool theft is these days.

Inside the hidden compartment lies a tool storage tray that can pull out for easy access to a wide variety of tools, all neatly organized for one’s convenience. Aside from dedicated space for a certain number of tools, there’s also loose storage located at the bottom for additional items, keeping everything nice and secure until it’s needed.

This is a pretty useful idea and one that could very easily make its way to production vehicles, given the fact that many already employ underfloor cargo storage for things like spare tires, jacks, and various other goods.
