Each weekend, all three NASCAR national divisions are one race closer to deciding what drivers will compete in the postseason Playoffs. After a slow start to the season for The Blue Oval, the NASCAR Ford drivers have found their way back to Victory Lane, and with less than 10 races left in the regular seasons, it’s never too soon to start thinking about what drivers will make the cut, and which ones won’t. This time around, it looks like the Ford drivers are in a good position to make a run at the championship.
According to the updated Playoffs predictions, several NASCAR Ford drivers are in good position to compete for the Cup Series championship. The projections are based on the assumption that the Playoffs fields would be set after the most recent races at Indy, ignoring the rest of the regular season.
Before diving in, as a reminder, each driver has their points reset to 2,000 for the opening round of the Playoffs. Each race win grants five Playoff points, which are then added to the 2,000. For example, Ryan Blaney, who has two wins in the Cup Series, gets 10 additional Playoff points for his efforts. Each Stage win counts toward one Playoff point, and each driver to finish inside the top 10 in the regular season gets additional Playoff points depending on their finishing position.
Starting with the Cup Series, where the automaker competes with Ford Mustang Dark Horse race cars, Ryan Blaney would be the highest-positioned NASCAR Ford driver, followed by Brad Keselowski and Austin Cindric. Joey Logano and Chris Buescher would be the only other Blue Oval racers to make the cut of 16 drivers, but that number could change, assuming another Blue Oval racer wins a race before the field is set.
In the Xfinity Series, the picture is a little bit different now that two NASCAR Ford drivers – Cole Custer and Riley Herbst – have won races in the division. They’re guaranteed a spot in the Playoffs, but the only other Blue Oval racer to make it into the championship hunt would be Ryan Sieg.
Finally, in the Truck Series, where the Ford F-150 is raced, Ty Majeski and Ben Rhodes would be the only two NASCAR Ford drivers to make the cut.
