Ford EcoBoost 1.0L Engine Replacements Authorized

The turbocharged 1.0L I-3 EcoBoost engine used in a number of Ford EcoSport and Ford Focus models in recent history has been the subject of lawsuits, an NHTSA investigation, and a recall over the past few months, all due to engine failures caused by a loss of oil pressure. FoMoCo ultimately discovered that the problem stems from a faulty engine oil pump drive belt tensioner arm that may fracture and separate from the tensioner backing plate, while the oil pump drive belt material may also degrade and lose teeth. Now, the automaker has authorized replacements for impacted models equipped with the Ford EcoBoost 1.0L engine.

According to WVLT News, at least one total Ford EcoBoost 1.0L engine replacement was authorized by the automaker for a customer whose EcoSport was affected by this particular issue, and The Blue Oval has also updated its website to include engine replacement as an alternative to waiting for new parts to arrive. “If the engine in your vehicle fails due to a damaged oil pump belt and/or oil pump belt tensioner, Ford has authorized your dealer to replace the engine assembly as an interim repair before the availability of remedy parts for the final repair. This repair will be free of charge (parts and labor),” the automaker stated.

This should come as welcome news to those who own an EcoSport of Focus model that contains these faulty parts, as those components aren’t expected to begin arriving until next year – potentially leaving some without a method of transportation. Ford initially issued a recall for this problem back in January, and the very next month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) closed its investigation into the matter as a result of that action.

Regardless, a class action lawsuit was later filed by a group of impacted owners, and even after Ford asked the court to dismiss it, that case will proceed after a judge was unconvinced by the automaker’s argument that the 13 plaintiffs involved in the case had not taken their vehicles in to have recall-related repairs performed.
