Ford Mustang GTD Nürburgring Record News Drops Next Week: Video

The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD packs supercar-worthy performance into the skin of the iconic pony car. Equipped with race-derived tech, extreme aero, lightweight materials, and an enhanced version of the automaker’s supercharged 5.2L V8, the Mustang GTD is the fastest production pony car in history. To prove that claim, the Mustang GTD was turned loose on the Nürburgring, and it looks like The Blue Oval has something to share about its record-breaking attempt on Germany’s most famous racetrack.

Ford released a trailer for a documentary called Ford Mustang GTD: Road To the Ring, which will drop on December 10th, 2024. In the meantime, Mustang enthusiasts can check out the trailer, which shows cinematic view of the Ford Mustang GTD on track at Nürburgring, a track that has earned a sinister nickname: the “Green Hell.” The documentary details everything that went into the Mustang GTD and its Nürburgring run, from simulator testing to pre-race prep and finally, the actual on-track action.

So what makes the Nürburgring so important? Laying down a fast lap time at the challenging course can prove a supercar’s mettle. The Ford Mustang GTD previously attempted to break the track’s record in October, but the attempt was foiled by poor weather, forcing The Blue Oval to take another shot at it later in the month.

As for what makes the Ford Mustang GTD so special, its supercharged 5.2L V8 engine doles out 815 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque, which allows the pony car to reach a top speed of 202 mph. It utilizes a dry sump oiling system that helps keep that powerhouse lubricated under heavy duty cornering, while extreme aerodynamic elements help keep it planted at speed. The unique Drag Reduction System can change the angle of the giant rear wing and activate flaps underneath the front of the car to provide a better balance between speed and grip – elements that are all critical for a record-breaking lap.

Thus far, Ford hasn’t revealed the Mustang GTD lap times, but let’s be honest – the automaker wouldn’t be so secretive if it hadn’t broken the record. Jim Farley previously stated that the company has targeted a sub-seven minute lap time for the GTD, which would represent a first for an American automaker.
