1997 Ford Mustang Convertible Pulled From Michigan Lake

Every so often, we see some pretty strange things pulled from bodies of water – including automobiles. Oftentimes, these vehicles are submerged in places like retention ponds, lakes, rivers, or even the ocean, then abandoned for various reasons. Years later, people tend to discover those vehicles and occasionally, even rescue them from their watery grave. We saw such a thing happen a few years ago when a Ford F-150 was removed from a lake after 30 years, and now, we’re seeing it again with a 1997 Ford Mustang convertible.

According to Fox 2 Detroit News, this 1997 Ford Mustang was found by a public works department siting at the bottom of Belleville Lake in Wayne County, Michigan recently. The dive team from Van Buren Township Public Safety helped pull the pony car from that lake, but at this point, it remains a bit of a mystery in pretty much every regard. It’s unclear why the Ford Mustang wound up in the lake in the first place, nor how long it’s been in there, either.

Officials do believe that the Mustang has been in the lake for several years at a minimum, given its sad state of condition. However, authorities couldn’t find any “identifiable information” on the vehicle, so they don’t know who it belonged to, nor how to contact them. As such, law enforcement is asking the public for help in locating the potential owners, or at least, information regarding how it wound up in the lake in the first place, as it was previously stolen, which they learned from the VIN.

“On July 28, Van Buren Township Public Safety’s Dive team recovered a red 1997 Ford Mustang convertible from Belleville Lake near Rawsonville Road,” the agency wrote in a Facebook post. “The vehicle was recently located and appears to have been underwater for several years. For clarification: The car was previously stolen so we are seeking more information than the VIN can provide.”

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
