The all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning has enjoyed its fair share of success since launching for the 2022 model year, beating out rivals such as the Rivian R1T, Chevy Silverado EV, and Cybertruck in comparison tests, but things could be taking a bit of a downward turn moving forward. The Ford F-150 Lightning posted some disappointing Q2 2025 sales results, and at the end of September, it won’t be eligible for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit, either. Now, the EV pickup has lost a comparison test to its hybrid counterpart, the Ford F-150 PowerBoost.
This comparison test comes to us from Edmunds, which just wrapped up its long-term review of the Ford F-150 Lightning after three years and 18,000 miles. They had a lot of praise for the EV pickup, gushing about its copious amount of power, towing capability, and they managed to beat its EPA estimated range figure by traveling 345 miles with the extended range battery pack. Edmunds also found the Pro Power Onboard feature to be quite useful for running all sorts of things, too.
Edmunds still prefers the F-150 Lightning over the Silverado EV, even though the latter has more to offer in terms of range, thanks to the Ford’s nicer interior and driving experience, coupled with its lower price tag. It’s a more conventional choice than the R1T and Cybertruck as well, which will appeal to some. However, Edmunds is also critical of the Lightning’s extra weight, and of course, towing diminishes range rather quickly.
As such, Edmunds prefers the Ford F-150 PowerBoost hybrid over the all-electric Lightning, which rides and drives better, and even has fewer squeaks and rattles after logging more miles. Aside from those factors and the ability to tow longer distances between refueling, it’s worth noting that the Lightning lost a whopping 50 percent of its value over just three years of ownership, which isn’t exactly ideal, either.

I own a 2024 Mavrick it is the best truck u have build in a long time. I have 33000 miles on it and all I do is oil change every 10000 miles no problems at all also rotating tires every 10000 and I still have the original tires on it thanks for a grea truck
If you think EV resale is bad now, wait until next year. There will be a lot of upside down auto loans out there.
I am very happy I leased after what Trump has done to the EV market. Ford will be stuck with a significant losses when they can’t sell EV for the lease residuals. Edmunds choice is mostly based on their personal needs so take it for what it is worth. My Lightning Lariat is the best truck I’ve ever owned.
