Ford EVs Sold In UK To Get Boost From New Government Incentives

For quite some time now, Ford UK managing director Lisa Brankin has been calling on the government in that part of the world to take action and roll out incentives designed to provide a boost for EV sales. This desire stems largely from the fact that Ford – along with its peers – are facing increasingly stiff regulations in the coming years that dictate growing percentages of EV sales in the UK, or fines if they don’t hit those marks. Now, UK officials have officially rolled out a new incentive program designed to help boost EV sales, in general.

The UK’s Department for Transport (DfT) has announced a £650 million (around $872 million USD) fund for its Electric Car Grant, which figures to help Ford and its rivals boost EV sales in the short term. “The confirmation of consumer grants – reducing the cost of sub-£37k electric cars by up to £3,750 – is great news for UK consumers and will make purchasing an electric vehicle much more affordable,” Brankin said. “Ford applauds the UK government for taking this step. We have been on the frontline of the conversation, highlighting the urgent need for consumer-based incentives for electric vehicles, and now they have arrived.”

“Ford Puma is the best-selling car in the UK and the government grant will help make the all-electric Puma Gen-E even more affordable. Combine this price reduction with lower electric vehicle running costs and Ford’s industry-leading Power Promise (that provides new EV customers with a free electric vehicle home charger and more) and the switch to electric just became a lot more enticing for Britain’s drivers.”

Ford recently decided to expand its Power Promise program to the UK, giving buyers a free home charger and standard installation, which further sweetens the proverbial pot and makes getting set up for home charging much easier. With the ICE Ford Puma continuing to post some of the very best passenger car sales in the UK, it’ll be interesting to see if that – combined with these new incentives – are enough to help the all-electric Puma Gen-E carve into some of those sales.
