Supercharged S550 Ford Mustang Takes On Tuned Dodge Viper: Video

The sixth-gen Ford Mustang makes an excellent starting point for tuners looking to turn the muscle car into a high-performance pony. Of course, the same can be said for the fifth-generation Dodge Viper, another piece of American-made muscle. YouTuber CarWow got its hands on a tuned version of each, and there was only one thing to do with them: find out which modified muscle machine is the fastest of the two.

The S550 Ford Mustang features the 5.0L Coyote V8, which is rated to produce 454 horsepower in its own right without any modifications. That simply wasn’t good enough for its owner, who topped that engine with a Whipple supercharger and bumping its output to 859 horsepower and 902 Nm of torque (roughly 665 foot-pounds). The Viper, on the other hand, brings 710 horsepower and 786 Nm (580 foot-pounds) thanks to its naturally aspirated 8.4L V8 engine. While the Mustang has the Viper in the power department, the inverse is true in terms of overall weight, as the Viper is considerably lighter.

The green flag falls on the first race. The Dodge Viper easily gaps the Ford Mustang, although the latter puts up a fight toward the end of the first run. During the second race, the Mustang gets off the line faster but just can’t quite shake the Viper, which rallies back once they both build momentum. Finally, the Mustang lunges ahead, crossing the line first.

A third run sees the Mustang just barely out front when it matters most. Now, it’s time for a set of rolling races, which the Mustang seems to like a lot better than the standing start runs. With both vehicles screaming down the straightaway, again, the Ford Mustang seems to have the upper hand in the first half – but the Dodge Viper winds up ahead at the half-mile mark.

In short, both vehicles are extremely powerful and appear to be evenly matched on the drag strip, leaving the results of this matchup up for interpretation. Another heavily modified Ford Mustang, this one hailing from the S197 generation, faced off against a Nissan R35 GT-R in a set of challenging drag races last year.
