Among the many unique and interesting models Ford has sold in North America over the years, the Merkur XR4Ti certainly ranks near the top, even if it is just a European Ford Sierra XR4Ti converted for sale in the U.S. After selling quite well early on, the Merkur XR4Ti wound up falling out of favor ahead of its final year on sale in America back in 1989, but we still see nice examples pop up for sale from time to time, and plenty of fans are working to keep them alive. Now, this very nice 1989 Merkur XR4ti is heading to auction, too.
This 1989 Merkur XR4Ti coupe is scheduled to cross the block at Mecum’s Indy Fall Special auction in October, and it’s a fine example of its breed with just 52k miles showing on the odometer. It’s in excellent, highly original condition as well, making it a prime target for prospective collectors – or just someone in the market for a nice, gently used Merkur. From what we can gather, the Radiant Red paint is in great shape, joining the factory eight-spoke aluminum wheels and features such as a tilting and sliding moonroof, as well as dual power heated side mirrors.
That’s also the case inside, where one will find a tidy interior sporting gray bucket seats up front, a 60/40 folding rear seat, air conditioning, power windows and locks, speed control, and an electric rear window defogger, plus side window de-misters.
In terms of power, that comes from the turbocharged 2.3L I-4 four-cylinder engine with multi-port electronic fuel injection, mated to the three-speed automatic transmission. This Merkur XR4Ti also touts power rack and pinion steering, along with power front disc brakes paired with rear drums.
We certainly don’t see a lot of nice Merkur XRT4i examples surface for sale that often, making this a pretty solid gem of a find. However, we did come across an interesting, heavily modified example back in June 2024.
