Over-the-air updates, or OTA, enable equipped vehicles to download and install new software wirelessly, eliminating the need to visit a dealership in person for some software-related issues. The Ford Transit van was not able to receive OTA updates – until now, as the 2026 Ford Transit will finally gain the capability.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the 2026 Ford Transit will utilize Ford’s Fully Networked Vehicle (FNV) electrical architecture complete with a 5G modem, enabling the van to receive OTA updates. That means that Transit owners will not have to visit a service center to address computer issues or receive updates to vehicle software in certain cases where the option is available.
In addition to OTA functionality, FNV bolsters cybersecurity, offering enhanced protection against hackers and cyberattacks while safeguarding user data. Over time, FNV will continue to evolve in order to deliver even more connected services to Ford owners.
In the case of the 2026 Ford Transit, the 5G modem must first be activated in order to utilize OTA updates, connected features, and Ford app remote features. It also enables Ford Telematics for fleet vehicles only, providing data on vehicle location, speed, idle time, fuel, vehicle diagnostics, and maintenance alerts.
Outside of the addition of FNV, 2026 Ford Transit is receiving some major software updates. It will no longer feature Sync 3 software, and will instead utilize Sync 4 for its infotainment duties. That also means it’s getting a 12-inch infotainment display as standard equipment across the entire lineup, along with a new eight-inch instrument cluster. The four-inch Sync 3 screen, meanwhile, is going the wayside, bringing the aging infotainment system one step closer to obsolescence.
At the time of this writing, pricing for the 2026 Ford Transit has not yet been released. The full-size van will bring about quite a few changes and updates, including the addition of Ford CoPilot 360 across all trims.
