Ford Expedition Refresh Set For 2028, Could Add Hybrid Variant

The Ford Expedition just received a full-blown redesign for the 2025 model year, one that brought forth fresh exterior styling, a totally revamped interior, and the debut of many new tech features – as well as the new off-road-focused Tremor. However, as is always the case in the automotive world, change is on the horizon at some point. Back in October 2024, a report surfaced that the Ford Expedition is in line for a mid-cycle refresh in 2028, and it seems as if those plans haven’t changed since then.

According to a new report from Automotive News, the Ford Expedition is still scheduled to receive a refresh in 2028, and at that point, it’s also possible that the large SUV will get a hybrid powertrain option. The Expedition has been rumored to be getting a hybrid for quite a few years to this point, so that news doesn’t come as a surprise, but it’s also something that we’ve been promised before – including as part of the 2025 model year redesign.

Regardless, it now seems more likely given the fact that Ford previously announced that it will add a hybrid powertrain option to every model in the ICE-focused Blue lineup by 2030, making 2028 seem like a strong possibility for the Expedition. It’s unclear what sort of hybrid the Ford Expedition might get, but recent comments from CEO Jim Farley could indicate an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) type of setup.

“Profitability for these larger family haulers that take long trips will be more frequently occurred through partial electric options,” Farley said during Ford’s Q4 2024 earnings call with investors. “Yes, PHEV, but especially hybrid and EREVs that on one tank of gas can get over 700 miles of range but still drive most miles all electric. Ford will be developing flexible body-on-frame and unibody platforms that will be designed for these multi-energy powertrains that are needed given the realities of customer affordability and range requirements.”

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
