Patent Suggests Ford Still Working On Facial Recognition Tech

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for facial recognition technology that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on November 28^th, 2022, published on August 5^th, 2025, and assigned serial number 12382169.

In recent years, Ford has filed more than one patent exploring different ways it may one day utilize facial recognition technology in its vehicles. That includes ideas for a vehicular facial recognition system that would enable authorized users to gain access in that manner, as well as a biometric authorization system that could do the same via facial recognition, fingerprints, or other similar methods. Now, this newly published patent introduces us to a new concept for facial recognition technology that may be used in future Ford vehicles.

In this case, Ford is once again proposing the use of facial recognition technology in vehicles, but in order to do far more than just unlock doors and start them up. Rather, The Blue Oval believes that this tech could also be used to activate certain functions in a vehicle, too. That process would begin as an authorized user approaches the vehicle, as the system would a range sensor to detect them while they’re walking toward it, then activate a camera to verify their identify and decide whether or not to unlock the doors. Such a method would also help cut down on unnecessary battery drain, according to Ford.
