The Ford Thunderbird is an icon in the automotive world, and that will always be the case – whether it ever returns to The Blue Oval’s lineup or not. While early T-Birds have always been valuable and collectible, we’re starting to see later examples receive more interest as well. That’s especially true of the Turbo Coupe, which was a unique performance-focused model that existed during a time when such things, well, weren’t exactly ripe with power. Now, this super low-mile 1988 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe looks to capitalize on that trend.
This 1988 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe is up for auction at Bring a Trailer with just 7k miles on the clock, an amazingly low figure for something that’s decades old. It was purchased new by the seller’s late brother, and now, it’s looking for a new home in excellent condition. The T-Bird is finished in black paint covering its unique Turbo Coupe specific bodywork, paired with the factory 16-inch aluminum wheels wrapped with Goodyear Eagle VR60 tires.
Inside the cabin, one will find Scarlet Red cloth seats and amenities such as a cassette stereo with a graphic equalizer, power windows and locks, cruise control, and automatic climate control, plus a series of auxiliary gauges in addition to the normal ones.
Power comes from the turbocharged 2.3L I-4 engine that was originally rated to produce 190 horsepower, mated to a five-speed manual transmission and a Traction-Lok limited-slip differential. It may not seem like much by today’s standards, but in the late ’80s, the Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe was a solid performer.
This is one of a few Turbo Coupes we’ve spotted at auction in recent months, too. That list also includes a 1987 model with 37k miles this past March, as well as a like new 1988 example with just 15k miles on the clock, too.
