As one of the more iconic vehicles to ever grace this earth, it’s no surprise that the Ford Mustang is also one of the most popular ones to modify, too. The pony car has been treated to a massive array of modifications over its six-plus decades in existence – many of them from the automaker itself – not to mention countless custom versions created specifically to show just what’s possible. Many of those one-off builds wind up on display at SEMA, only to be sold off at a later date, and that is true of this custom 2012 Ford Mustang, too.
This 2012 Ford Mustang was built by the folks at Mustang Racing Technologies (MRT) for the 2011 SEMA show, where it won a Special Recognition award for Outstanding Achievement in Design. Now, it’s set to be auctioned off at Mecum’s upcoming Dallas/Fort Worth auction in Texas at the end of October. This particular ride is chock full of mods, which were more than enough to land it a spot at SEMA, as well as in the May 2012 issue of Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords magazine.
On the outside, those tweaks include an MRT custom hood with heat extractors, an APR rear wing, 3D carbon fiber fender heat extractors, an MRT splitter and quarter window inserts, and Forgestar 18-inch wheels wrapped with Toyo Proxes tires.
The whole thing is covered in a custom two-tone orange and black paint job with MRT graphics, too. Inside, this pony car is fitted with a 10-point roll cage, a CNS fire extinguisher, an SCT touchscreen, and Sparco racing seats.
Mechanically speaking, power comes from the 3.7L V6, in this case fitted with a ProCharger, an MRT oil cooling system, plus an MRT Stainless MaxFlow H-pipe and axle-back exhaust system, and it’s mated to a six-speed manual transmission. MRT tuned the chassis as well, which features H&R coilovers and Baer disc brakes. Other notable upgrades include a Ford Racing rear axle, MRT brake ducts and cooling fans, a Dynotech one-piece driveshaft, and an Eaton e-locker carrier, making for a rather comprehensive build.
Nobody expects to win Nürburgring right away.
