Over the past few years, more than one class action lawsuit has been filed over Ford F-150 pickups equipped with the 5.0L V8 Coyote engine, which claim that a variety of faulty internal components are causing those powerplants to exhibit excessive oil consumption – in some cases, leading to engine failure. The Blue Oval has been trying to get one such lawsuit in Canada dismissed on the grounds that it’s offering free repairs for oil consumption issues within warranty and mileage limits, but now, it’s facing another lawsuit from more Ford F-150 owners.
According to Car Complaints, this new lawsuit – Bryan, et al., v. Ford Motor Company – was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan by plaintiffs represented by The Miller Law Firm, P.C., Sauder Schelkopf LLC, Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll PLLC, Handley Farah & Anderson PLLC, Baron & Herskowitz, and Gordon & Partners, PA. Like the aforementioned lawsuit, it claims that 2018-2020 Ford F-150 pickups with the Coyote V8 are defective and consume excessive amounts of oil.
Additionally, the lawsuit alleges that the owner’s manual is incorrect in this case, as it pertains to how much oil these Ford F-150 pickups use and how often oil must be added. Since the engine can’t maintain proper oil levels across the recommended interval, it notes that owners must pay close attention to avoid running too low and causing engine damage. On top of all that, the lawsuit also alleges that the engine allows oil to pass into the combustion chamber, which decreases performance and fuel efficiency while leaving carbon deposits behind.
Ford has previously denied these claims, arguing that it set a “minimum criterion for oil consumption for average retail customers based on laboratory/customer correlation” of 10,000 miles per quart (MPQ), which it calculated using “engine laboratory oil consumption … mapped to public road vehicle operating conditions.” It adds that MPQ isn’t based on real-world driving behaviors and is only used as a benchmark for internal testing purposes, and that it “does not quantify expected oil consumption in the Owner’s Manual or other customer information.”

Just had our engine replaced by our local dealer. It required fresh oil change then “rechecks” every 200 miles for 1,000 miles. The threshold is one quart usage per 1,000 miles.
Now we are waiting for parts to repair defective 10 speed Auto. Geez Ford! Love the truck though!
I feel your pain. I replaced the engine in my 2020 F-150 V8, and within 3 months replaced the 10-speed transmission! It’s not even paid for and we’ve already worked out over $10,000 in repairs.
My name is Justin Walden I just bought this truck and I’ve had it for 3 months and and 3 months I have put in between two oil changes mind you that I did not let go 5,000 mi. I also had to put two quarts out of time because that’s what when it goes all the way to the second hole that means it’s two quarts not one quart by the way and I have put a minimum of 8 quarts and two oil changes and yes my truck does idle a lot during the day and the heat I don’t know I think that they should take the time and replace the motors in these trucks for what the money we’re spending on them.
Got a 24 Coyote and don’t see problem yet.
That piece about referencing the owners manual is bad advice unless you paid 100$ they want for a printed owners manual. Yes 77,000.00$ truck does not include a owners manual, did have the corrections addendums but no manual.
Have a 2018 f150
I’ve had to 10 speed transmission replaced two times from dealership and lifters replaced as well. it’s got be some kind on lemon law on these trucks !! Not to mention all the oil consumption
I have a 2018 Ford F150, over 50,000 miles now. She drives loud and braking choppy. I don’t know if calipers are sticking but she seems to ride rough. How can we join this lawsuit? Will we be contacted?
I have replaced 2 starters 1 -10 speed transmission and now they are telling me my timing is off and that’s what is making it kil on me at the stop lights. I have a 2019 F150 Platinum. I have 76000 miles on it. Is there a Lemmon law on these trucks or a recall that I missed ?
I’m having the same issue. 2019 Lariat. The dealership here told me to change my spark plugs after the had it for 2 days. Replaced plugs with Ford OEM replacements. No change.
I had to get a new engine a year ago because of this. I got a complete lemon
I have a 2018 with the 5.0 Coyote with just over 100K on it. It has always used about a quart of oil every 3500 miles since new. It hasn’t changed over the life of the engine so far. I tow about 3K per year with it. The fuel injectors have always been noisy but you can’t hear them in the cab with the windows up. The 10 speed trans was serviced at about 70K and has been flawless. It still drives nice & tight. I’ve driven GM pick-ups in the past and those engines ran quieter and had little to no oil consumption between oil changes. I’d like if my F150 did the same but the oil consumption does not seem excessive to me. I like the truck and plan to keep it at least a few more years as the value isn’t very high any longer and it is still serving its purpose.
I have a 2017 F150. It has 113,000 miles on it. It’s been everywhere. We even tow a 30’fifth wheel. Towed it to Alaska and back. Doing it again next year. It’s used oil since around 50,000 miles. I thought all cyote’s did.. But it has a way that helps me. It’s called a dip stick. I check it regularly. No problem. Would not trade that truck for anything.
I have 2018 uses oil and I had to replace the transmission at 134,000 . Ford owes me big all the extra oil usage and the cost to replace a transmission that ford knew it was causing issues.
I have a 2018 coyote 5.0 and it always burns oil and have had to replace the 10 speed transmission. How do I get involved with the law suit?
Everyone really needs to get involved on the P.O.S 10 speed transmission I’ve heard you can get them to take out the active learning bs and it works correctly?
I have 2019 f150 i bought new in 2020 I have been issues with the engine making noise and using oil they have done nothing about it i only have 25000 miles on the truck I change the oil every 2500 miles I hope they do something about it now with this class action
Just traded in a 2021 F150 with 168k miles and was consuming 2 to 3 quarts between oil changes that were happening around 5k to 7k miles. It has been in also for the 10 speed transmission as well as my wife’s ranger had same transmission issues requiring a new transmission. Even after that replacement we were still having issues and were told to drive it until it breaks so they can find the root cause. Traded that in before it could happen since I didn’t want the wife or myself stranded somewhere.
I have 2018 F150 with 92k miles.. its had all the items ford would replace under my extended warranty. It uses 1.25 quarts every 3k miles… now the 10 speed transmission is acting up… uggg… how do I get more details on this legal actions?
I have a 2020 5.0 and have to add a quart every 3,000 miles. I had the oil changed and drove 2000 miles and light came on, 2 quarts low. Went to dealer and told them I thought they didn’t fill correctly, but of course they said that was not the case. Never owned a vehicle where had to add oil all the time except one that had an oil leak.
Its called stop using the oil they say to use and from day one and go bk to 5w 30 winter and 1030 summer
Also forget the book the line says where the oils supose to be. Put it there and do your next oil changes 5500 miles stop going over. Same with the 10 speed trannys abcd 1234 I dont care what package you have the levels supose to be at middle 2 n half b N c and for all these little changes they’ve done to say this n that get your self a hp tuner or sct flash tuner pre tunes for 400 500 bucks. Get your shot together ford lovers and you wont have an issue
I have been driving ford truck since
My first 1978 Ford V-8 F-150 350 engine. And back then engine oil we used were 10w 40 for summer driving and 10w 30 for winter driving and change oil every 3000 mile as per Ford Manual. And that’s
What we did with My 2000 ford F-250 V8 7.3 Liter diesel also. Used heavy oil also. But all the Other Vehicles that I have owned cars ,trucks. I have put in amount of oil the vehicle said it’s supposed have in it. Like if it’s 3.3 liter engine or 7.3 liter engine. That is supposed to amount of oil it supposed to go in the engine every time you change oil. Not by the dip stick. Now I got a
2013 F-150 V8 XLT , bought in used
At 160,000 miles. And when I Change oil I have to put in 6-1/2 quarts of oil in it. Isn’t that too much oil for a 5.0 Liter engine.
Of all the Vehicle that I have owned until now. All the manual says do not over fill oil. So what’s with this
5.0 Liter engine with 6-1/2 quarts of oil and the dip stick still says low oil
It’s still not in the cross hatch mark.
They either have a short oil dip stick or the oil pan is just too big for the 5.0 Liter truck. I put 7.3 liters of oil in my 7.3 liter 2000 Ford F-150
V8 diesel engine. WTF is going on.
That oil pan is just
it holds 7.7 qts. full in my 2011 coyote it uses a lot of oil too
I have a 2018 F-150 with the 5.0 coyote engine . I was changing the oil every 10,000 miles and it would lose a quart at about 6,000 miles . Started changing the oil at 5,000 miles but ,it still loses about half a quart in that time . The engine has a slight tick in it since I bought it in 2018. Ford dealership never did anything about it . So far I haven’t had any big issue with the 10 speed transmission . I love the truck and don’t understand why Ford would put such a product like this.
2020 F-150 had this same issue. Burning 1-1.5 quarts every ~1K miles.
I had a 2018 with the 5 liter motor, loved oil, lol. Was eating oil at a rate of 2.25 liters for every 8000 km approx. ( I’m in Canada) At 8000 km, it was below the add mark. Took it to the dealership multiple times. At first they said Ford is saying it’s normal, then when more complaints start coming out, then they said Ford told them to have owners monitor the oil every 200km, which is impossible for 99.5% of people. Then they wanted me to bring it in to them every 200 km. Which I told them, that’s not happening unless I’m compensated, because I live 1 hour round trip from the dealership. Them Ford issued a fix, they changed the dipstick and did something to the computer, that didn’t fix anything, still ate oil. Asked why they changed the dipstick, nobody could answer that, lol. Asked how many liters of oil it takes between the add mark to the full mark, they had no idea again, don’t have much faith in any dealership, once they make the sale, if anything goes wrong, you have to fight them to get anything fixed. Stupid me, I made them take it back, another fight, but they finally did, but then I bought a 2021, hoping for less headaches, guess what ? Still lot of problems, just different ones. It’s been in the garage probably 20 times since new, with all kind of issues. Only good thing is Ford has fixed it for free, just out my time and gas, and put probably an extra 1000 km on the truck driving back and forth. So I’m still out quite a bit of money.
At 96,000 miles, my transmission started bucking, especially coming out of the Alabama hills. Was told by a Ford dealership that it will cost me $5,000; $4,000 for the trans and $1,000 to replace it. Yes, the truck is drinking oil like a drunk sailor and this engine is horrible. I am replacing oil every 1,000 miles too. This was my dream until it became my nightmare. I had a Honda Accord that ran over 300,000 miles and never had a major issue. FORD, you fooled me once, never again. There needs to be a class action lawsuit about their 10-speed transmission.
I had a 2018 XLT with 30000, burned atleast 2 qts in 5000 miles. Fords fix was a longer dipstick, an oil change and reflash the computer. Excellent truck, but I couldn’t trust the motor and got out.
I Had a 2019 Ford F150 3.5 eco-boost what’s 79,000 miles on it cam phasers failed. Replace them with OEM parts drove for 2000 miles failed once again replace those And developed A significant oil leak that could not be located. And again the cam phasers failed in the end. I had to sell the truck at a considerable loss and purchase a new truck. Ford was not sympathetic with the issue and wanted $4800 to repair the cam phasers again. I am out several thousand dollars. lastly, the transmission was acting up.WTF Ford
oil consumption and timing chain guides fell off and loud ticking noise this is the second engine the first one seized at 397 kms then install second one with ticking noise said there was no prob;em until 195000kms
out of 16 fords i never seen such problems
yours truly
william durfy stratford ontario canada
mine is a 2018 ford F-150 5. litre coyote
I have a 2011 F150 FX2 with the Coyote V8 and replaced the motor due to oil consumption issue. After the first oil change with the new motor that Ford had overhauled, it was eating oil again. It was covered under warranty, however, they did not have a replacement. It took about 3 months to swap it out.
My 2019 v8 f150 is in the shop getting a new engine now. It was always using oil and there was never any warning lights or anything that would alert you untill the engine seized up. The lifters always made to much noise but the dealership acted like it was normal. I’d like to get on this law suit also.
It’s not just the 2018 up it’s from the 2011 up! Every 3 days I check my oil that’s about 60 to 80 miles and I’m always tipping it off. Had this truck from 20,000 miles to 115000 and it’s always been the same from the first day I bought it. And don’t get me started on the six speed transmission and its downshifting if it gets reved to high.
i think you are correct sir.
I have a 2018 f150 with the 5 litre coyote also. I have to add oil every 3rd tank full. Oil change place told me to add lucas oil treatment to try and help the problem. Still didn’t work. How do you fo about getting on the lawsuit against Ford?
It’s a fast truck and it runs hard with a ten speed transmission depending on how hard the driver’s run this truck it’s going too us Oil , come on people you asked for fun! I so Loved 351w 1975 Torino it used Oil but very fast maintenance is the cost for fun. Ps I’m having fun!
I’ve got 2018 F-150, it uses about a litre of oil as well but I check it once a week or after a long enough trip. The tranny does kick back as well but not all the time, 124000kms now and love the truck. How do I get in this law suit?
2019 XLT. Drinks oil between oil changes. Engine itself sounds like it has a million miles on it BUT it has 40K
Ford should be required to issue RECALL
I think it’s a joke, I have worked 37 years in Law Enforcement, and I bought this 2020 used Ford F150 as a retirement gift to me. I’ve always loved Ford trucks; I can’t afford another truck now. I just wish I could get a new engine in it. Of course, that depends on if they have ever fixed the problem. The only ford truck I’ve ever had that needed oil was a 1996, F250 Diesel. Please Ford how can we fix the issue.
I have a 2017 with the same issue , i even added a catchcan and you can actually see how much oil this v8 wants to dump out.
Is there any action on the 3.5 l turbo cam Phaser issue??
When are you people going to learn that the auto manufacturers are building over priced garbage with cheap parts?
The u.s. auto makers no longer care about pride or quality, the only thing they are interested in is how much money they can milk out of the consumer in terms of price, cost of parts, the waste of your time, cost of rentals etc.
This does not include the cost of the frustration and mental anguish and other hardships that they caused you.
I’m equally a victim of ford and dodge because of their garbage. Seems to me that my money needs to go to a foreign auto maker rather than to monopoly operators in the u.s.
Yup mines been eating about a quart every 1k miles it quits on me at stoplights once in awhile but it’s always serving like it’s gonna die tried just about everything you can think of changed plugs multiple times a year used different brands of oil tunes nothing works there needs to be a recall on these damn things I’m just hitting 130k miles love the truck but these problems need to be fixed or replaced oh and I’ve had to replace 3 faulty rockers that have went out on me which btw is majority of these ticks you see online only fix is to replace and when you go to store and get new one it’s not even the same rocker arm yet there’s no recall crazy
I have a 2018 F-150 4×4 with the 2.7 ecoboost twin turbos. 195,000 miles, 10 speed auto. Everything is all original. Not a single problem ever. Change oil every 5000-7500 miles with full synthetic 5w-30. I live in Minnesota and we have bad winters up here. The 2.7 is fords best engine imo. Stay far away from the 3.5 and 5.0. Stay away from the 2.7’s made 2017 and older. Only buy 2018 and up. The 2.7’s block is made out of the same material as the diesel engines, turbo chargers are water cooled, low end torque. I’ll buy only the 2.7.
I have that issue going on with my 2020 f150…truck goes through oil like sand on an hourglass. I have been having my oil change place document every time I have it checked which has been about every 1200 miles and they add 1 or 2 quarts each time. Get proof that you have it checked or Ford may say it is not their problem
Got mine used at 100k miles. Burns a quart before 2000 miles. Insane.
I have the 2018 fi50 and everything since new there’s b32n a sleight knock in the engine and it even ran almost dry on oil once, with no warnings. Now the engine knocks even louder. I h3ard there was se kinda recall for a knocking engine
I have 2011 f-150 FX2 5.0 with 269,500 miles on it. I have to check the oil every week because it is usually about a half to a quart low depending on how much I’ve been driving it that week. When I brought this truck it had only 60,000 miles on it. I’ve only had to change out the transmission and that was just about 6 months ago..I’ve noticed that it is using more and more oil here lately..
I have a 2019 lariat i burn a quart of oil every 1000 miles this is BS. Do better ford.
Truck use too much oil I have a 2018 Ford F150 that use at least 5 quarts in between oil change.
I have a 2019 ford F 150 and it goes through oil alot had both of the catalytic converters replaced and all 4 oxygen sensors replaced and no recall notice was ever sent to me
I have a 2020 f150 with the 5.0 engine. Same issues with my truck. Oil consumption and transmission issues. I’m just waiting for that day when transmission or engine stops working. Poor quality truck. It looks nice but too many mechanical issues. I do not recommend buying one. This is my first and last ford vehicle.
I just sold a 2017 F150 Sport with the V8 and 6 speed Trans … not one issue, never burned a drop of oil and it ran like a raped ape.
My 2018 was issued with the wrong dipstick. I was told by the dealer fors was reusing gen 2 coyote dipsticks in the gen 3 motors. I was burning a ton of oil in the early days. First 20k miles i was burning no less than a half a quart a week. This was thanks to the engine being overfilled with oil and it was pushing it through the pcv valve and into my intake to be burned. Ford replaced the dipstick and did nothing to acknowledge they likely trashed or hurt my catalytic converters. Ford refused to fix my 10r80 since day one. Always took the easy way out with s TSB that did nothing to fix the shifting issues. Finally a service manager told me to blow it up to get ford to fix it. Well it went out at 59,500 miles and was replaced. A month later it blew the trans gasket out on the highway almost causing me to spin out. How it didnt catch on fire is also a mystery to me as it sprayed everywhere including on cats. Truck slammed gears hard before leaving me stranded in the hood. They replaced the gasket and then tried telling me it didnt harm the trans. It still shifts like garbage and im at 106k now. Ive had cam phasers put in the truck. Shim kit installed on the torque converter and im waiting for it to drop a U-Joint any day now. Same rattle noise since day one that ford claims they couldnt reproduce, bs. 3rd ford i owned and my very last ill ever get burned by them.
We have a 2018 answer 2020 F150 both with Coyote motors, both have had 10 speed tranny replaced, 2018 at 36k miles, 2020 at 25k miles, the 36k was out of warranty by 300 miles and 1 month, $8k later, still having issues. Both use 1 gallon of oil every 2500 miles, and they shift up/down/up/down and it is ridiculous. Then we had the water leak from the air conditioning ruin the interior which cost over $1000…. I remember in the 70’s, Have You Driven a Ford lately meant something of HIGH QUALITY, now I will never buy another and Toyota Tundra gets my next parking space after I unload these 2 POS!
