One of the biggest concerns prospective EV buyers have about those types of vehicles pertains to battery life and degradation, which occurs over time – ultimately reducing the amount of range those vehicles are capable of covering on a single charge. However, we’ve seen some promising data in that regard as of late, as the average Ford Mustang Mach-E battery is designed to last at least 10 years, and retain 90 percent of its original capacity at the 100,000 mile mark – and we’ve seen at least one hit 250k miles without experiencing much degradation at all. Turns out, the Ford F-150 Lightning battery pack seems to be holding up quite well, too.

In this recent video from the State of Charge YouTube channel, we get an update on a Ford F-150 Lightning after three years of ownership and 38,000 miles, which includes a range test to see just how much capacity its battery has lost over that timeframe and distance traveled. This test is identical to the one our host conducted when the truck was new, so it’s a nice and even comparison, and amazingly, the truck traveled 285 miles before hitting zero percent – and it kept going after that.

Ultimately, the Ford F-150 Lightning covered 286.7 miles before it was all said and done – a full 16 miles further than it traveled when new, during the same test. Our host notes that the conditions were better, however – it was warmer – but not too hot – and the wind was blowing in the right direction, which undoubtedly helped.

Looking at the data, the Ford F-150 Lightning was at its most efficient during the 100-75 percent state of charge range, after which things tapered off just a bit. The truck hovered around the same miles per kWh consumption throughout the entire test as well, ultimately hitting 2.3 after dipping as low as 2.1. Overall, it’s a very promising result, and good news for any F-150 Lightning owner looking to keep their truck for a while.
