Ford Files Patent For Tech That Could Help Diagnose Bad Shocks

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a shock service advisory algorithm that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on March 1st, 2024, published on September 4th, 2025, and assigned serial number 0276555.

The Ford Authority Take

Ford has published quite a few patents recently outlining potential future systems that could detect when parts are about to fail or need to be replaced due to damage, which could come in handy for a number of reasons. Those filings include ideas for a part failure detection system and a suspension damage detection system, to name just a couple. Now, this newly published patent gets a bit more specific with a new idea for a shock service advisory algorithm that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.

The concept here is to develop a system capable of determining when a vehicle’s shocks are in need of replacement. This proposed system would be able to do that by using sensors to collect data, and then compare that data to some pre-existing values. It would even be able to manually cycle a vehicle’s dampers if needed, comparing one to another, and then warn the driver if something is off. Such a system could prove quite useful if it does come to fruition, perhaps preventing additional suspension damage from occurring.

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
