Ford Flex Mechanically Totaled Over Myriad Of Issues: Video

David Long of the Car Wizard YouTube channel (and owner of Omega Auto Clinic in Kansas) has seen his fair share of problematic vehicles over the years, including some from The Blue Oval family. Among that group, we’ve seen a few more modern Ford models wind up being “mechanically totaled” over repair costs that would exceed the value of the vehicle itself, including a 2010 Lincoln MKT with a bad turbo that would require a $4,000-$5,000 investment. Now, that’s also the case with this Ford Flex and its myriad number of issues.

This 2013 Ford Flex rolled into Long’s shop with 130k miles on the clock, but it’s quite clean and seemingly in great shape – at least, cosmetically. Back in April, the owner had the timing chains replaced, though at the time, the vehicle wasn’t experiencing any issues. However, the next day, the owner noticed that the tachometer was jumping around sporadically, which the shop that performed that job attributed to damaged harness pins causing a misfire.

The shop reportedly fixed that issue, but more have arisen since – the valve cover had a sensor that was spraying oil all over the engine because it wasn’t installed properly, then a clicking noise, then a loud clunk when the Ford Flex was tooling down the highway, after which it stopped running – and the owner found antifreeze mixed in with the engine oil. The owner took the crossover to another shop, but by the time it wound up at Long’s, it was completely hydrolocked and won’t even turn over.

In this case, it seems as if the issues impacting this Ford Flex can largely be attributed to poor mechanic work, which is a real shame. At this point, the engine simply can’t be rebuilt and would have to be replaced entirely, and Long estimates that getting it running properly again will cost around $12,000-$13,000, which is more than the vehicle is worth at this point.
