Future Ford Pickup Tailgates Could Get Deployable Workstations

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for deployable workstations that may be used on future Ford pickup tailgates, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on March 18th, 2024, published on September 18th, 2025, and assigned serial number 0289356.

The Ford Authority Take

Ford has published quite a few patents in recent months outlining various ways it’s thinking about making pickups more usable, not to mention coming up with better ways to haul cargo around. This includes more than one patent filing for things like a deployable work table and deployable workstations, which would fold neatly out of the way when they’re not needed, and then rapidly deploy when they are. Now, this newly published patent presents us with an idea for something similar – deployable workstations that may be used on future Ford pickup tailgates.

In this case, the deployable workstation would be built right into the inside of a pickup’s tailgate, so when it’s closed and not being used, it wouldn’t take up too much space in the bed. When one does need a workstation on the go, however, it would fold out into a much larger surface, one that also features a raised platform that could slide backward for easier access. The work station could also be used to clamp various tools and things like wood, which one could then cut with a saw – making it pretty useful, if this particular feature does one day come to fruition.

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
