The Ford Authority Take

In recent years, Ford has published a handful of patents exploring potential new ideas revolving around one particular area – the exterior of more adventurous types of vehicles, in terms of ways one could make them more accommodating. That includes ideas for a set of unique accessory steps and a roof chair system – both of which could be used on future iterations of the Ford Bronco. Now, this newly published patent presents us with another new idea, this time, for a bed-mounted deployable shelter system that may be used in future Ford pickups.

This particular concept pertains to a shelter system that could be stored in the bed of a pickup, looking much like a fastback-style cap when it’s not in use. However, that same shelter could also be unfolded into a large tent, which would extend over the bed and cab of the pickup. There’s seemingly enough room for two folks to sleep in that tent, as we can see in these patent drawings, which feature a bed and even a pair of windows. Given the ever-increasing popularity of these types of setups, it wouldn’t be surprising to see this one become a reality one day, either.

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
