Along with low-mile vehicles of all types and rare/coveted models, we tend to come across quite a few custom or heavily-modified automobiles on the auction circuit, too. Many of these older-yet-updated restomods or customs are powered by the popular Ford 5.0L V8 Coyote engine, a modern powerplant that’s largely reliable and capable of churning out big power, if one wants to go that route. That’s also the case with this very cool 1955 Ford Thunderbird that’s set to hit the auction block very soon, too.
This custom 1955 Ford Thunderbird is scheduled to go up for grabs at Mecum’s 2025 Las Vegas sale in November, and it’s a comprehensive piece with a laundry list of updates. The T-Bird was put together by the folks at Phoenix Hot Rods, with a heavily-modified body that’s been smoothed out, de-chromed, fitted with side exhaust cut-outs, and sporting huge, deep dish wheels, to boot. The body is covered in gray paint with a black center stripe, adding to its more modern appearance.
Inside, one will find a very much custom interior as well, fitted with metal seating sporting exposed rivets, racing harnesses, and minimal padding – not something one would want to spend hours cruising around in, we imagine. It looks cool at least, and is surrounded by a roll bar for the driver, updated instrumentation, an aftermarket steering wheel, and lots of smooth, painted surfaces.
Rolling on a brand new chassis from Scott’s Hot Rods, power for this first-generation Ford Thunderbird comes from a built 5.0L V8 Coyote engine with forged pistons, twin turbos, and various other mods that aren’t listed here, for some reason.
It’s mated to a Tremec six-speed manual transmission, which has been fitted with a Centerforce twin-disc clutch, sending power back to a Ford 9-inch rear end with Moser axles, and Wilwood brakes to help slow it down – making for one fast, fun, and cool-looking modernized T-Bird, we’d say.
