The Ford U.S. Heritage Fleet houses a number of concepts from The Blue Oval's history - some that are wild dreams like the 427 concept and others that laid the foundation for production models. One such "realistic" concept is the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning. The all-electric pickup that preceded the real-life F-150 Lightning is preserved within the U.S. Heritage halls, and it's hardly distinguishable from the real deal, although it was clearly based on the previous generation Ford F-150.
This 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning concept is the very model that starred in a teaser video from 2020 showcasing the all-electric F-Series pickup before its official reveal. This prototype - which didn't carry the "F-150 Lightning" nameplate at the time - existed to show off what all-electric power could do for pickup buyers. It was seen hauling a trailer up a steep hill without breaking a sweat and diving into the mud, presenting its incredible off-road prowess, too.
Then, later, that very same 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning concept took center stage in a second teaser. This video showed the electric pickup dashing through deep snow, completely unfazed by the slick environment, with his "All-Electric Prototype" livery on full display. It still sports the "Built Ford Tough" badge on the doors, yellow against its black paint.
This model went through "tens of thousands of hours of torture testing and targeting millions of simulated, laboratory, and real world test miles," as Ford put it, smoothing the path for the real-life F-150 Lightning.
There are over 500 vehicles in the Ford U.S. Heritage Fleet, which was opened in the spring of 2025. So far, just over 50 of them are on display for workers to check out at its headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. These include the F-150 Lightning concept and the Ford Interceptor concept, which was not really an "interceptor" at all, but a predecessor to the Ford Taurus. It also hosts the 1999 Ford SVT Lightning, a high-performance pickup with no relation to the all-electric F-150 Lightning.
