In recent years, Changan Ford - a 50:50 joint venture between FoMoCo and Changan Automobile in China - has performed well in various J.D. Power studies, including the annual China Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and China Initial Quality Study (IQS). Now that the 2025 version of the China VDS has been released, it reveals that Changan Ford once again managed to produce some solid results in that particular area, too.
This time around, Changan Ford ranked third among all mass market brands in China with a score of 172 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), placing it behind only FAW Toyota (156 PP100) and GAC Toyota (158 PP100). It also ranks the joint-venture well above the segment average of 202, which is great news for The Blue Oval in that particular market. Changan Ford also ranked third in the 2024 VDS with a score of 174, marking a bit of an improvement - which was also the case with Ford and Lincoln in the 2025 U.S. VDS.
The J.D. Power VDS measures the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles over the past six months by owners of 13- to 48-month-old vehicles. It covers 177 specific problems grouped into nine major categories - exterior; interior; driving experience; features/controls/displays (FCD); infotainment; climate; seats; powertrain; and driving assistance, with a lower score reflecting higher vehicle quality. This year's study found that overall, design-related issues caused an increase of seven in terms of PP100.
“The industry performance of the Initial Quality Study and Vehicle Dependability Study has been on a steady decline the past two years,” said Elvis Yang, general manager of the auto product practice at J.D. Power China. “Notably, VDS quality issues now emerge earlier within 1-2 years of ownership, and this should be a wake-up call for all stakeholders. Long-term reliability, durability and big data validation were once ICE vehicles’ core edges over NEVs. Yet under dual pressures of faster electrification and price cuts, how ICE makers maintain quality has become critical.”
