Donald Trump Calls Ford F-150 A 'Hot Truck'

As Ford Authority reported last week, U.S. President Donald Trump just embarked on a trip to Japan, where he met with officials as the two countries work to hammer out a new trade deal. Japanese officials have mulled the idea of allowing U.S. manufacturers like Ford to sell vehicles at Toyota dealerships, and has considered allowing them to import models like the Ford F-150 to help smooth over those talks. During that same visit, Trump once again took the opportunity to praise the Ford F-150, specifically, too.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is mulling the idea of purchasing of around 100 Ford F-150 pickups that it would use to inspect things like roads and dams, as Ford Authority previously reported, a development that Trump was asked about during his visit. The President responded by saying "That's great. She has good taste. That's a HOT truck." Ford CEO Jim Farley certainly appreciated the praise, and shared video of Trump's comments on his own X account, saying "Thank you, Mr. President. We agree."

As of now, it's unclear if Japan will move forward with its plans to purchase some Ford F-150 pickups, but there's certainly a possibility that it happens. "The F-150 is one of Trump's favorites," said Ryosei Akazawa, Japan's top trade negotiator, in a recent news conference when asked about the particular possibility. "However, there is nothing specific I can say."

Ford used to sell vehicles in Japan, but withdrew from that market back in 2016. In recent months, Trump has urged that country to allow for greater imports of U.S. vehicles, which currently represent a very small slice of that market - just 16,000 units in 2024, in total, compared to the 1.37 million vehicles Japan exported to the U.S. over the same time period. Those numbers could soon increase, however, following a tariff agreement that would allow for the sale of U.S.-based imports without the need for additional safety testing in Japan.
