Ford Motor Company has filed to trademark “IonBoost” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Ford Authority has learned.
Filed on October 2nd, 2025, and assigned serial number 99425387, the application contains the goods and services description of “Rechargeable electric batteries; Electric batteries for vehicles; Batteries for electric vehicles; Electric vehicle battery packs,” and “Electric drives for vehicles; Electric motors for land vehicles; Vehicle power train mechanism comprised of clutch, transmission, drive shaft, and differential.”
Way back in May 2021, Ford announced it would be using the IonBoost and IonBoost Pro names for a new range of batteries for future electric vehicles, with lithium-ion chemistry for retail applications and lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) used in commercial applications. Then, in January 2022, Ford filed to trademark IonBoost with the USPTO, using the goods and services description of “electric drives for land vehicles, electric motors for land vehicles, power drive units for land vehicles, and electric powertrains and drivetrains for land vehicles.”
Since then, we’ve heard essentially nothing about IonBoost at all, and much has changed in the EV market, in general. After committing billions to expanding its EV lineup, signing raw materials supplier deals, and erecting new plants, Ford has since scaled back its electrification plans to meet softer than expected demand from consumers. Regardless, it remains committed to EVs in the long term, so perhaps we’ll see the IonBoost branding appear in the very near future.
Meanwhile, Ford recently filed to trademark “Ranchero,” which could be revived for an as-yet-unnamed mid-size EV pickup set to enter production at the Louisville Assembly plant soon, with a planned launch date of 2027. That future model will reportedly offer up 51 kWh of usable energy from its LFP battery pack, which is quite tiny when compared to most EVs on the market today. However, it may also be offered with nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries as well.
Along with a couple of other Blue Oval models.
Potentially enabling owners to change all sorts of things.
Even though it's exported to certain other markets.
The boxy body-on-frame SUV is set to make a comeback.
Setting the stage for the next Dakar Rally.
By a razor thin margin, at least.
