Future Ford Vehicles Could Smarter About Securing Floor Mats

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a floor mat and fixing apparatus that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on December 16^th, 2022, published on October 14^th, 2025, and assigned serial number 12441222.

Nearly two years ago, Ford published a patent presenting us with an idea for multifunction floor mats, which would be able to fold in various ways, even providing a bit of elevation when needed or desired. This way, the vehicle’s occupants could transform the floor mat into a foot rest, which may provide a bit of relief on long journeys, if nothing else. Now, Ford has published a new floor mat patent, but this time, it’s aimed at keeping those pieces in place more effectively.

The latest feature we may one day see in future Ford vehicles is a floor mat and fixing apparatus that would use special attachment points and fasteners designed to secure floor mats to the seat rail itself, which would seemingly make it very difficult – if not impossible – for the mats to move around unintentionally. This has become a problem for many over the years, with some floor mat movement even leading to unintentional acceleration cases and accidents. Thus, perhaps this kind of solution will one day help prevent such things from happening.
