Last year, travel influencer Lexie Alford completed a rather epic road trip behind the wheel of a Ford Explorer EV prototype, starting out in Nice, France, after which she crossed six continents and over 30 countries, becoming the first person to circumnavigate the globe in an electric vehicle at the same time. Aside from setting that mark, this particular journey was also designed to drum up consumer awareness for the then-new Explorer EV, too. Recently, a German couple embarked on their own worldwide trip, but it was in a much older, less feature-laden model – a 1991 Ford Bronco.
With a little help from The Blue Oval’s Pilot Plant team in Cologne, Germany, Alexandra Rondorf and Jürgen Walleneit have embarked on a multi-year global expedition that will take them from that city all the way to Sydney, Australia. They’ll be tackling that trip in a 1991 Ford Bronco that they found online and purchased, which was formerly used by the military.
“We are now the third owner of the vehicle. It’s an old army vehicle with an engine mileage of so many hundreds of thousands of kilometers, that we don’t even know if it’s not already at a million,” said Jürgen, who previously worked for Ford as a precision mechanic in Niehl. The Ford Pilot Plant team was eager to help ensure that the old Ford Bronco was road-worthy, giving it a thorough inspection and mechanical refresh, ensuring that it’s ready to rack up many more miles in the coming months.
As for the reasoning behind this journey, the couple wants to demonstrate how mobile work can be successfully implemented in the most remote corners of the world. Their project – “MilesMeetsMoments” – combines the duo’s marketing agency work with a more nomadic lifestyle. Along the way, they will also be searching for and sharing the success stories of German entrepreneurs who have built a life for themselves abroad, creating a unique blend of adventure and business storytelling. This trip is already underway, and when complete, it will span more than 30 countries.
