Supercharged Ford Mustang V8 Takes On Camaro And Challenger: Video

The Detroit Big Three – Ford, Chevy, and Dodge – have been rivals almost as long as the automotive industry has been around. YouTuber CarWow Drags pitted the Ford Mustang against the Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger to find out which icon of American muscle was fastest.

The Camaro ZL1 packs 770 horsepower, the Challenger Hellcat Redeye throws 808 ponies, and the Mustang harnesses the 5.0L Coyote V8 topped with a supercharger, good for 859 horsepower. On paper, the Ford Mustang should have the competition beat, but there’s only one way to find out for sure. In the first race from a standing start, the Camaro actually gets off the line quickest, but once the Mustang and Challenger get up to speed, they pose a bit more of a threat to the Chevy. However, at the line, it’s the Challenger out front, followed by the Camaro, and the Mustang bringing up the rear.

Video still of the Ford Mustang on track against the Dodge Challenger. The Mustang had a surprisingly tough time keeping up.

With the Camaro out of contention, in a matchup of the Mustang and the Challenger, the Mustang gets a better launch than its rival. There’s no contest – the Ford Mustang is out front. The next duo race went about the same, though the Challenger answered with a little more speed, but it wasn’t enough to win.

A half-mile roll race between the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger is next. This actually hands the advantage to the Challenger for the first race, leaving just one more matchup on the table. Again, the Mustang lags, chasing the Dodge across the line.

However, in a brake test from 100 mph, the Mustang grabs the brakes first, decelerating far quicker than its rival. The findings of the day? the Mustang just didn’t have the juice to keep up with the Challenger. Pity that the Camaro laid down – seeing how it held up against the other two would have been an interesting spectacle.

It’s not all doom and gloom for the Ford Mustang bloodline, though. A supercharged S550 Mustang had enough get up and go to match a tuned Dodge Viper stride for stride.
