We’d wager it’s nearly every gearhead’s dream to be able to participate in every sort of high-performance driving school there is: road racing, open-wheel, rally, etc. Sadly, though, such programs cost money, and not all of us can write the experience off as a business expense.
But MotorWeek can, so they sent their own Zach Maskell to Dalton, New Hampshire in order to experience the Team O’Neil Rally School, where he learned to drive a prepped Ford Fiesta at the limit on some snow-covered roads.
The Ford Fiesta makes for an excellent rally car for beginners because of its small size, nimble handling, approachable power output, and of course, its front-wheel-drive configuration, which makes it easier to control in low-traction conditions. The cars that Team O’Neil uses are equipped with manual transmissions, giving the driver complete control over the gearing and power transfer.
Should you happen to own a Ford Fiesta, we certainly recommend attempting any of what you see above at home – unless you’ve had professional instruction, of course. But be sure to give the latest episode of MotorWeek‘s “Over the Edge” a watch, and maybe think about squaring away money so that you, too, can learn how to be a rally driver.
