Ford Recalls Plug-In Charging Cables Over Fire Risk For 2012-2015 Models

Citing a fire risk, Ford has recalled over 49,000 charging cables for 2012-2015 model year plug-in hybrid cars. The automaker said using the supplied 120-volt cable in a worn out wall outlet or an outlet not on a dedicated circuit could increase the wall outlet’s temperature and lead to a fire.

The 120-volt cables shipped with the following cars:

Ford said in its recall announcement that it’s been notified of some fire incidents, but no injuries have been reported due to a charging cable fire.

To remedy the situation, Ford will replace the old charging cord with the latest 120-volt unit that includes a thermistor. The added protection can identify temperature surges and cease charging until the temperature returns to normal in the outlet.
