Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for hanging seats in the tailgate/cargo area that could be used in future Ford SUVs, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on January 11th, 2022, published on January 16th, 2024, and assigned serial number 11872910.
The Ford Authority Take
Ford has long been exploring ways to make the cargo areas of utility vehicles more useful, filing patents for ideas such as multi-purpose mounting brackets that could be used to mount various accessories, as well as a liftgate-mounted privacy panel that would be able to extend it from a retracted position between the upper and lower tailgate panels, or coupled to the aforementioned hanger bracket assembly and the liftgate – either way, the intention here is to provide a little bit of privacy when one wants to hang out in the back of their SUV or crossover. Now, this newly filed patent for hanging seats in the tailgate/cargo area presents us with something pretty similar.
The feature outlined in this new patent filing is similar to the aforementioned privacy panel, but in this case, the idea is to provide owners with an easy, impromptu seating area that doesn’t take up much space, yet would be perfect for tailgating at events like concerts or ahead of various sporting matches.
The seats depicted here would be easy to fold away and store when not needed, but when the time calls for some tailgating, one could simply pull them out and mount them in the cargo area using a series of tabs. It’s a simple yet potentially useful idea, and as such, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it come to fruition at some point in future Ford SUVs.
