Donut Media Turned $500 Ford Ranger Into $100K Racer: Video

The folks behind the Donut Media YouTube channel purchased a rather beat-up, high-mileage Ford Ranger back in early February, and since then, have been hard at work transforming it into a proper desert racer. As one might imagine, this is no easy or inexpensive task, and in fact, DM has spent a significant amount of money buying up fancy parts and installing them on their compact pickup over the past few months. Now, some time later, they’re finally putting a proverbial bow on this pricey project.

In total, the Donut crew claims that they’ve sunk a whopping $100,000 into their Ford Ranger desert racing project, which is a staggering sum – particularly when we consider how cheap it was to purchase the actual truck itself in the first place. With pretty much everything installed at this point – and even a fresh wrap covering its new flanks – it’s time to put the finishing touches on this Ranger by taking it out to the desert and fine-tuning the new suspension setup.

Additionally, the team must ensure that the Ford Ranger is legal to participate in upcoming desert races, reliable enough to finish them, and of course, safe enough to protect its occupants in the event of a crash. There are a few things that pop up during this test run that have to be addressed, but overall, it’s a great success.

When it comes to individual components, this Ford Ranger build consists of $15,000 worth of suspension upgrades, $5,000 in beefy brakes, an $18,000 interior, a $50,000 engine, and an $8k body kit. Now that the hard work is done, it’s time to take this pricey build out to Mexico for the NORRA 500, where it will be subjected to 500 miles of some of the most grueling conditions on earth – and with any luck, it’ll live up to the hype, as well as its lofty price tag.
