The rugged Ford Bronco launched in China back in early 2024, though it isn’t produced in the U.S. and then exported to that market. Rather, the Chinese Bronco is built locally for the Chinese market by Jiangling Ford, a joint venture between FoMoCo and Jiangling Motors, even though it looks essentially identical to its American counterpart, save for a few minor differences. However, a mysterious Ford Bronco model was spotted testing in China this past May, and now, we’re getting a better look at it.
When we last saw this very unusual Ford Bronco a couple of months ago, it was clad in heavy camo, but it looked a heck of a lot like the existing Ford Bronco Sport in many ways. Now, we’re getting our first look at this new Bronco sans any sort of covering, thanks to noted Chinese auto expert Tycho De Feijter, who was able to retrieve these photos – along with some juicy details about that model – from the country’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
Ford Bronco goes EV and EREV in China – with lidar – MIIT July
The Ford Bronco is made in China by Jiangling (JMC) -Ford. Until now, it was an ICE-only car. But no more.
Soon, Ford will add two new versions to the Bronco line-up: an EV and an EREV.

This new Ford Bronco model will be produced in China by Jiangling Ford, just like its bigger brother, but that’s essentially where the similarities end. In fact, this new model will be offered with two powertrains that no other Bronco has at the moment – an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) setup, as well as a pure EV option. The EREV utilizes a turbocharged 1.5L gas range extender with two electric motors – a 130 kW unit up front and a 180 kW piece in the rear – as well as a lithium iron-phosphate battery sourced from BYD Findreams. Pure EV range comes in at 220 kilometers (137 miles), or 1,220 kilometers (758 miles) with the gas extender added to the mix.
As for the all-electric Chinese Ford Bronco, it’s set to utilize a 130 kW electric motor up front and a 202 kW unit out back, also paired with an LFP Blade battery from BYD Findreams, giving it a reported 650 kilometers (404 miles) of max range. If all of that isn’t enough, we can also see the presence of a new advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) with LiDAR present above the windshield and sensors on the front fenders, signaling the arrival of more advanced autonomous capabilities.
Interestingly, Ford previously stated that while it plans to offer extended-range EVs in the U.S. for a variety of models – those are reportedly at least two years away. In this case, however, both the Chinese Ford Bronco EV and EREV are reportedly set to launch in that country later this year.

Much like the way Ford once leveraged its connection to Mazda, I hope they can combine the best of their Chinese partnership efforts to make a range of compelling vehicles worldwide.
Generally, vehicles developed for China, for the most part, have been criticized when those vehicles, or their design, have come to the US. Just ask GM. Trax being the only exception (design, in this case). This vehicle under discussion has no reason to come to the US, in whole or in part.
If you’ve ever driven a Bronco Sport, you understand the meaning of a soup can.
Hopefully, the Chinese will keep this “vehicle” in China.
