Ford began rolling out over-the-air (OTA) updates back in 2021, thanks to its new and improved connected vehicle electrical architecture. That capability spread rather quickly to additional models, and in just two years, the company had already delivered 13 million software updates to owners. Those updates have run the gamut from mere bug fixes to improvements and the addition of numerous features, including Amazon Alexa integration, video streaming apps, and more. Now, we’re getting some updated figures as it pertains to Europe, specifically.
In the first half of 2025, Ford delivered a grand total of 1.7-million OTA software updates to customers in Europe, a staggering figure, indeed. “Our OTA business has picked up significantly since 2021. In fact, we’ve done 1.7 million OTAs in the first half of 2025 alone, including finally delivering BlueCruise to our 2021-2022 MY Mach E customers,” said Peter Geffers, Manager EU Model e Connected Vehicle Software. “We’ll be hitting the 5 million OTA mark later this year with significant warranty cost savings and increased customer satisfaction as well as feature offerings including BlueCruise, Karaoke, etc.”
“It’s quite a feeling when we actually hit the button and you know that so many customers are going to benefit,” Geffers added. “We also have so called drive inhibit updates, which the customer needs to schedule in the HMI, as the vehicle is inoperative for the time of the update. This method is used for example with powertrain updates where the update can’t be downloaded while the vehicle is driven.”
Back in August 2023, Ford shared that it had delivered more than a half-million updates to customers in that region, with 300k of them happening that year alone. The very first OTA update was released for the Ford Mustang Mach-E back in June of 2021, but since then, FoMoCo has ramped up its efforts significantly, with a number of SYNC 4-equipped models receiving multiple updates in the ensuing years.
