Ford BlueOval SK Teases Announcement For August 19th

Construction at the future BlueOval SK Battery Park plant in Kentucky has been ongoing for quite some time now, and even though a lot has changed in terms of consumer demand for electric vehicles, that site is still on track to begin building batteries for EVs very soon. In fact, that was previously slated to begin in Q1 2025, but now that we’re past that point, it seems like only a matter of time before the plant is operational. Now, the joint-venture between Ford and South Korean battery manufacturer SK On is set to make a major announcement, too.

BlueOval SK has been posting about this forthcoming news on its X account, calling it a “big announcement” and “big news,” all while adding a countdown to tomorrow, August 19^th – even claiming that “everything is going to change.” It’s entirely unclear what this announcement may be, but it wouldn’t be surprising if BlueOval SK Battery Park is indeed ready to begin building EV batteries after missing its previous deadline.

There are several other possibilities as it pertains to this potential announcement, too. Due to a general slowdown in demand for EVs, a recent report claimed that Ford rival Nissan will utilize part of the BlueOval SK Battery Park site to build batteries for its own EVs starting in 2028, though none of the parties involved confirmed this report when asked to comment on the matter at that time.

Ford CEO Jim Farley also recently stated that the company is “looking to repurpose our unused battery plant assets,” which is notable given the fact that it will in fact have unused space in the BlueOval SK Battery Park site after downsizing its previous plans. Ford could opt to build batteries for energy storage purposes there as well, as Farley recently hinted at, which are in big demand these days. Meanwhile, workers at the plant itself are scheduled to hold a vote determining whether or not they’ll join the United Auto Workers (UAW) union on August 26^th and 27^th, too.
